Adolescence can be both an exciting and dreadful time for teenagers. As children enter into adolescence they are bombarded with physical, emotional, and mental changes. During this time, teenagers are developing a sense of their identity and how they fit into the world around them. They strive towards independence yet still are dependent on mom and dad. It is definitely a confusing period in everyone’s life and one filled with challenges and new obstacles. Teen counseling can help adolescents sort through these confusing times. Although they are starting to look more and more like adults, teenagers are from it. Even the official adult age of 18 is an arbitrary number that defines the beginning of adulthood. Every teenagers develops at their own pace and many need guidance and a little pushing into the right direction.

Teenagers are susceptible to a number of mental health issues. In fact, over 20% of children and teenagers suffer from mental health disorder according to a new report published by the Center of Disease Control (CDC). Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed mental health condition for teenagers. There are a number of treatment options for ADHD including medication such as Adderall and behavioral counseling. Counseling is a natural and constructive treatment method that teaches teenagers how to change habits and develop techniques to help them overcome their difficulty concentrating without the need of stimulant medication such as Adderall.

Depression and anxiety follow ADHD as the most common issues affecting adolescents today. Depression and anxiety often go hand and hand and can have a tremendous impact on a teenager’s life. As a parent, talk to your teenagers about their moods and look for changes in their behavior to seek early intervention from a health professional. If your teenager’s behavior has changed at home, it’s a good idea to ask their teachers about their behavior in the classroom to get a better idea of what is going on. Fortunately, depression and anxiety are very treatable mood disorders. According to PsychCentral.com, counseling has been shown to be equally effective for treating depression as antidepressant medication. Counseling has no side-effects and its benefits go beyond the reduction of symptoms.
